On assignment in the Abruzzo region of central Italy.
We travelled to the medieval Apennine village of Navelli and filmed the locals painstakingly harvesting by hand the world’s most expensive spice, Saffron. The stigmas of the delicate purple crocus flower produce this complex ingredient and takes about 200,000 flowers to produce just one kilogram. Saffron from this region in Abruzzo is the best in the world with its extra-long threads, strong scent and deep red colour.
